Fruited Plains is committed to ensuring some of the basic necessities of life; food, clean clothes, and hope for a future; are available to all people. As one of many charities helping Africa, we have undertaken this mission in Kenya to fight back against the ravaging effects of poverty, disease and starvation. As a 501 (c) (3) non-profit charitable organization, and a community based organization in Kenya, Fruited Plains not only provides assistance to marginalized peoples in need, we provide them with the tools, resources and skill-sets to lift themselves out of poverty and despair. If you give someone a meal, you've fed them for a day, however, if you teach them to grow food sustainably, you've fed them for a lifetime. There are many different ways that African charities are leading the charge against poverty in Kenya and other countries, and here at Fruited Plains, we feel this is the most effective way for us to initiate lasting change in the lives of these people.

Instead of being forced to purchase new seed to grow maize (the primary staple crop in Kenya) each year, communities that we've worked with have been able to turn to an alternative variety provided by us that produces seeds for the next season. This represents a fundamental shift in the economy of how these people feed their families. Additionally, with knowledge of proper composting skills, it is no longer necessary to purchase the fertilizer needed for bountiful yields each season. Can you imagine the kind of difference these two simple things can make in the day to day lives of individuals that had previously struggled to feed their children, and themselves? Lastly, with surplus crops, it becomes possible for these communities to develop farms that can take crops to market, and Fruited Plains provides much needed assistance in both the logistics and business aspects of commercial farming.
