Africa Relief Organizations

In 2007, the amount of food aid provided to governments (called programme food aid) was at historically low levels. The same year, Kenya suffered a devastating food shortage, which some have gone as far as calling a famine. In situations like the one that occurred in 2007, food aid in Africa is of critical importance, and that is where organizations like Fruited Plains come in.

Fruited Plains is one of many Africa relief organizations. Fruited Plains provides food to thousands of people in Kenya, and with our Planting Seeds project, Fruited Plains is able to effectively reduce poverty and starvation by providing maize to the marginalized people of Mt. Elgon. More importantly, however, Fruited Plains is able to provide these people with a plan for the future.

Food Aid: Africa and Fruited Plains

At Fruited Plains, our Planting Seeds project enables the people of Mt. Elgon to feed their families as well as sell or trade for other necessities. Our Planting Seeds project provides farmers with maize seed that can be planted year after year, eliminating one of the largest expenses farmers in Mt. Elgon face, which is purchasing seed maize. In addition, Fruited Plains has partnered with local churches to teach residents how to companion plant, how to create their own compost, how to get their crops to market to receive a fair price, and how to use a budget to conduct a profitable business. Unlike other organizations providing food aid, Africa based Fruited Plains teaches the residents of Mt. Elgon how to provide for themselves.

In addition to food aid, Fruited Plains provides interest free business loans as a part of our Building Hope project, as well as school supplies, uniforms, and medical care for children in our Caring for Kids program.
