CARING FOR KIDS PROJECT UPDATES
God Responds to the Needs of His Children

God is doing amazing things in Kenya and has heard even the smallest cries! While in Kenya, there were two new opportunities for Fruited Plains to respond to the needs of God's children. First, meet Esther. Esther was rescued from her mother. Her mother drowned her older sister and the people of the village took Esther in order to protect her from the same fate. Esther was malnourished and could not walk because her mother kept her swaddled with her legs up over her head for long periods of time. The people who rescued Esther brought her to Sister Freda's Cottage Hospital. The medical staff worked with Esther and she is now healthy and walking. As a matter of fact, she keeps the nurses on their toes! On more than one occasion, Esther can be found running down the halls of the hospital with a nurse running to catch up to her!
Unfortunately, the people who rescued Esther do not have the means to care for her. She has been living at the Cottage Hospital which is no place for a healthy little girl. Sister Freda's Cottage Hospital operates on a very lean budget so the extra expense of caring for Esther is difficult. The hospital often treats up to 100 people per day and if lucky, 3 of the patients will be able to pay for services provided.
Fruited Plains was able to find a couple with big hearts to provide financial support for the continued care of Esther. Sister Freda and her husband Richard have been able to clear out a small room on the hospital property and convert it into a home for her. They are currently interviewing women to live on site and care for her. Richard and Freda have a pre-school feeding program at the hospital making it easy for Esther to attend the school.

We would also like to introduce you to baby Moses. While in Kenya visiting with Sister Freda, she received a phone call stating that a newborn was found abandoned in the bushes on the farm at the Cottage Hospital. He was approximately 2 weeks old and the umbilical cord was still attached! Moses is a healthy baby. Sister Freda asked if Fruited Plains could assist in finding someone to adopt or sponsor Moses. Through friends in the U.S. we heard of a couple who is interested in adopting Moses. Due to the lengthy process of adoption, Fruited Plains will sponsor baby Moses until he is adopted. He will be living with Esther and a caretaker in the mean time.

While in Kenya, I was able to spend time with the kids from the boys home. As a reminder, during our trip to Kenya in August of 2005, we worked with Philip from the Tumainisha project and Geoffrey, a young man in Kenya who runs a drop in center for street children called Oasis of Hope. Together, we opened a home to get six boys off the street. The boys are doing great!! They have bonded as a family and Nimrod, the house parent, is doing a great job in caring for these boys.

While visiting, I discovered that 3 of the boys were elected to positions of leadership in their class. This is huge considering just several months ago these amazing children lived on the streets! They are doing well in school and genuinely care for one another. I had the pleasure of taking these boys out to dinner one night. They were so excited. I don’t believe any of them had ever been to a restaurant before. So for them, this was a new experience. For me, it was an incredible blessing to share in this experience with them. During dinner, I asked them what they want to be when they grow up. Bramwel (nickname “Smiley”) wants to be president, Edwin and Jonah both want to be policemen, Evans wants to be a pastor, Elvis an attorney and Paul wants to be a pilot. How great is it that they now can dream about their future?!
