Latest Kenya Food Crisis Information

Kenya is frequently the subject of conversation amongst UN officials and citizens of the world as they are very often the victim of food crises, serious enough to be called famine by certain individuals. In 2006, the UN warned that there would be an alarming number of deaths in Kenya if food aid was not delivered to the nearly 4 million people facing the threat of starvation. More recently, in 2008, the Kenya food crisis rebounded due to a 50 percent rise in food prices. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), the people of Kenya were forced to drastically reduce their daily diets, and many foods, like meat, became luxuries that many simply couldn't afford.

The food crisis in Kenya, however, is ongoing. While it may not be as highly publicized as it was in more dire times, the problem has not been eliminated and will not be eliminated until the source of the problem is fixed. That is what Fruited Plains is committed to doing.

Fruited Plains is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit charitable organization committed to the idea that everyone should have food to eat, a place to live, and an opportunity to provide for themselves and their family. At Fruited Plains, we are committed to helping the people of Kenya become self sufficient, and we believe that is the key to solving the ongoing Kenya food crisis. Our Planting Seeds project, in particular, provides maize seed that can be planted year after year, teaches farmers how to make their own compost to eliminate fertilizer costs, and teaches those farmers how to budget and make a profit to purchase other necessities for their family.
