Kenya Food Shortage Solutions
To help the people in Kenya, we need to equip them with the necessary tools to be self-sustaining. By shipping food overseas to combat certain death, the people of Kenya are able to survive the current situation, which is very important, but they do not learn how to prevent that situation from arising in the future. In Kenya, starvation must be attacked from the ground up, and that is exactly what Fruited Plains' Planting Seeds project does.
Our Planting Seeds project eliminates the two biggest costs associated with farming: seeds and fertilizer. Fruited Plains provides farmers in Kenya with special maize seed that can be planted year after year and shows farmers how to make their own compost out of natural materials. In addition, the churches and community leaders that Fruited Plains works with show the people of Kenya how to make a budget for their farm, and how to create profits to purchase necessities for their family.
2009 was Fruited Plains' first year distributing new maize, and in order to manage the project, Fruited Plains started small. Now, however, the operation involves 383 families within five local churches, and in 2010, our goal is to train and distribute seed to another 500 families.
We encourage you to take a moment to read our updates, and to review some of the testimonies that we have received from the people involved. We believe that our solution is an excellent answer to the food shortage question, and we encourage you to learn more today.
