PLANTING SEEDS
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), over 10 million Kenyans face starvation. Agriculture is absolutely vital to poverty reduction"- (Andrew McMillan, FAO director of food operation).
The two biggest expenses in farming are seed and fertilizer. The marginalized people of Mt. Elgon can not afford these costs and as a result, many are sick, and children are dying of malnutrition. Most maize (corn) seed, the staple food in Kenya, has to be purchased each planting season. Fruited Plains however is able to supply the people with a maize seed that can continue to be planted year after year. This particular seed will allow the people to feed their families, sell or trade some for other household necessities, and plant the remaining for the next season. Once the people have this rare see they will never need to purchase maize seed again.
Fruited Plains is working with the local churches on Mt. Elgon providing the congregation with maize and bean seeds as a gift offering. The recipients of the seed are taught how to companion plant these two crops as well as how to make their own organic fertilizer. After the people begin using their own organic fertilizer, they will never need to purchase commercial fertilizer again. This takes care of the second biggest cost in farming. After receiving the training and seed, every family will be self sustaining in terms of food.
Because the people live on a mountain, they have difficulty getting their crops to market. As a result, many have been unable to sell their harvest or have accepted less by middle men who go up the mountain to purchase the crops. Fruited Plains also assists the people in getting their crops to the markets where they are able to get fair market value.
All recipients participate in a business seminar where they learn how to itemize their farming expenses, understand profit, and budget for the next planting season. This enables the people to better manage their income throughout the year so they are able to meet the needs of their families.
Our goal is to end starvation on Mt. Elgon and assist the people to become self sustaining; providing a better life for themselves and their families.
